T. C. Lai的《中国对联》前十联英译比录

《中国对联》是香港翻译协会会长、翻译家赖恬昌（T. C. Lai）、书法家第一本对联英译本，其中前十联英译如下：

1、 绿水本无愁因风皱面，青山原不老为雪白头。

The green water has no worries

but the wind has given it wrinkles;

The blue hills are not old

but the snow has given them white hair.

2、 青天似水无鱼月钩空钓，白露如珠出蚌雨线难穿。

The blue sky is like water without fishes;

the moon-hook dangles aimlessly;

The clear dew-drops are like pearls from oysters;

the rain cannot thread them.

3、 幸有香车迎玉女，愧无白酒慰嘉宾。

Fortunate enough to have a fragrant carriage

to receive the bride;

Ashamed not to have good wine

to entertain our guests.

4、 敢谓素娴中馈事，也曾攻读内则篇。

Dare we say she is well-versed

in womanly duties?

She is certainly familiar

with the chapter on “Domestic Virtues”.

5、 近水知鱼性，居山识鸟音。

Living near the water

one knows the nature of fishes;

Living in the mountains

one understands the sounds of birds.

6、 云无心以出岫，鸟倦飞而知还。

The clouds without the intention of roaming

nevertheless come out of the caverns;

The birds being tired of flying

know when to return home.

7、 福无重至今朝至, 祸不单行昨晚行。

Fortune does not come repeatedly –

but it does this morning;

Calamity does not travel singly –

but it did last night.

8、 鱼游水面分开绿，蜂入花心点破红。

A fish gliding on the surface of the water

parts the green;

A bee settling in the middle of a flower

breaks the red.

9、 不知春去几多试问陌头杨柳，欲探秋来消息且看井上梧桐。

How far gone is Spring?

Ask the willows on the banks;

Want some news of Autumn?

Look at the palownias by the well.

10、月升灯失色，风起扇无功。

When the moon has risen,

the lamps lose their luster;

When the breeze breaks,

the fans lose their purpose.
